"Gentleman's Quarterly"

November 2022.  David Jacob Kramer, an established journalist, came to visit our home while he was working on an investigation into the "back to the land" movement of the 60's, and how ithings have changed..` His article, "The Lat Glimpse of Vanishing Hippie Utopias".  He visited places in Northern California, from Mendocino to Humboldt County to see what is left after these past 50 years.  Many of the places were developed by communes, which has crumbled over time, and only ruins remain.  We have a small family farm, and David was happy to see our home still intact, and our farm still functioning.,

Our old friend, and neighbor, Richard Evans, met David in Eureka, and escorted him out here, along the unmarked dirt roads to our place.  It is a two hour ride, and by the time they got here, they were good friends.  Richard is also an artist and the most striking feature of our house is a stained glass swindoe that Richard had made for us, in a frame made by another friend, Ralph. Torres.  Michael Schmelling, accompanied him and took many photos of our owner-built home.  Richard's life story is so compelling, and his window is so beautiful, they were a part of this article. The  photos that were taken of the rest of our house may be in a new book that David Kramer expects to have published this summer.

Richard's Window

Richard built this window in Tom's woodshop.  He had helped develop this stained glass construction technique that would allow for three dimensional creations.  Richard loved geometry, and cut all of the peices to exact dimensions.  Tom and I held the pieces together as Richard glued them into position.  The window has endured since the eighties, through storms and earthquakes.  Sadly, both Richard and Ralph, the master carpenter, have passed away.  Although we were longtime friends of them both, they never met each other.  We are thankful for this beautiful representation of their individual work
